Generic and store-brand products

Velia: How come your grocery bill is less than mine. We bought more or less the same stuff.

Annar: Well I noticed that you go for the big-name brands.

Velia: Don't you?

Annar: No I try to buy generic and store-brand products. They're always cheaper than the big-name brands.

Velia: But they don't look so good. The packaging isn't so attractive.

Annar: It's what's inside that's important. Fancy packaging is what you pay extra for.

Generic指「某一類東西共有的」,general則指「一般的」,例如﹕(1) The generic term for trout, salmon, carp, etc, is "fish"(鱒、鮭、鯉等的統稱是「魚」)。(2) The general opinion is that the president should step down(一般人都認為,總統應該下台)。

例如﹕(1) Generic medicines are cheaper but no less effective than those with trademarks(沒商標的藥,比有商標的便宜,效用則不稍遜)。(2) This is the generic equivalent of Coca-Cola / This is generic cola(這是和可口可樂同類的沒商標飲料 / 這是沒有商標的可樂)。

Store-brand本是美式英語說法,但今天英式英語也常用這個詞,例如﹕Both supermarkets in Hong Kong have their own-brand / store-brand products(香港兩家超級市場,都有自己牌子的產品)。

留意You go for the big-name brands這一句。Go for有「喜歡」、「挑選」的意思,例如﹕(1) Not every man goes for blondes(男人不一定都喜歡金髮女郎)。(2) He goes for Cantonese food(他愛吃廣東菜)。
